Beveled edge and Lazy Susans.

Brian was here yesterday with the edging. You can't tell much about it with the tape. But it looks very nice! He's coming back in the next day or so to remove the tape and do any sanding that might be needed.
Also. The Lazy Susan shelves are the wrong ones. :-( The guy at Davis Lumber ordered shelves that would be attached to a shelf already in place. We need the one that has a pole in the center. Will take this back and wait for the correct ones. I am quite sure I told him I needed shelves just like the ones I took over there, just bigger. It's a good thing we aren't on a strict time schedule!!!

Christmas Cactus, and others...

About two weeks ago I moved all my Christmas Cactus outside to let them have some fresh air. Apparently, they like it a lot!!! The big one is trying to bloom!!! This could be a result of the fresh air, but could be the addition on compost around it when I put it into a bigger pot.

The Gerber Daisies and fig bush cutting are looking good, too. I ran out of pots, so I'm using emptied paint cans for the daisies. The fig tree/bush is from a neighbor. Her daughter lives close to Dallas and has a big fig bush that produces huge figs. I can hardly wait to see what it will do!!!

Let's see what else I have out here on my deck... Heirloom tomatoes that I started from seed back on Feb 19th. They look good and when I rub a leaf between my fingers, it smells just like tomatoes!!! The Rosemary was dying fast in the house. But when I put it outside and added compost, it started putting out new leaves/ needles. Mmmmm! I love that smell!!! Smells like Christmas!!! :-)

Speaking of Rosemary... When I was in Italy in 2008, one of the places we stayed had them all around the building. Along with lemon and line bushes in big pots. They have big rooms on the back where they store the plants that can't tolerate cold weather. Well, I suppose the basement at the cabin would do for over wintering my plants???

Wonder if I could get my HUGE Cornstalk plant down there??? :-) I've had it since 1988. It was given to us after David's mother died. I'm thinking it was from my brothers & sisters. It's about time to cut the top off it. I don't want it to bloom, again. It has bloomed twice. It smelled great for the first few hours, then it started to be a sickeningly sweet, overpowering scent. All thru the house!!! I had to cut it and throw it into the compost bin. The great thing about it blooming was that it put out another shoot! Now, there are four stalks instead of the two it had at first.

King size bed.

We ordered another platform to fit on top of the other one. We decided we needed the extra storage space. And we'll learn how to crawl up onto the bed once the 12" or 13" mattress is on it. :-) will just have to be careful and not roll off it in the middle of the night!!!

Some progress on the cabinets

Brian was here again this morning. He put the doors and drawer fronts on the bedroom. Put the window seat in the guest bath. The tops are on the bookcases. Trim on top of the tall cabinet in the kitchen. Cut out the hole for the receptacle in the bath cabinet.
I've got quite a lot of painting to do this next week, but David's working long hours, and that will give me lots of time to "play".

Over the Frig Cabinet.

I was so excited about the corner cabinet that I totally missed the one over the frig. Good Grief! That is going to be rough when I start painting that thing!!!! Move the frig out first??? That would work!

Update... 24APR12 when Brian was here two or three weeks ago, I asked about taking this cabinet down and extending it so I could reach it without a step stool. He's going to build another one that is deep enough to reach. I'll use this one on the utility room for storage.
I think I'll put a sticky note on it for Brian to let me paint it before he attaches it.

Countertops and Corner Cabinet.

I was so surprised when I opened the door! Brian had been here this morning and I missed him. He glued down and trimmed the Formica on all the counters. And put the corner cabinet in place!!!

That cabinet and the beadboard ceiling were inspired from Granny Huddleston's house on 42nd Street in Texarkana, Arkansas. There's a nursing home there now. I've driven past it twice since 1972. It just isn't the same.

When I was a little girl, we went to her house every Saturday morning. She knew were coming and would have a fresh batch of Tea Cakes in a cookie jar. It was always sitting in the corner cabinet.

Granny and Grandaddy had ten children. She tolerated no nonsense in her house! So, my little sister and I knew there were Tea Cakes in that cookie jar, but we knew better than to touch it until she said it was ok. Then we only got one. I don't remember if she ever "invited" us to have a second. That would have been an unexpected treat!!!

Granny died in January 1972. With so many girls and women in our family, you would think that one of us would have taken the time to ask for that recipe??? I'm sorry to say that we didn't. I guess we thought she would live forever. And make those awesome cookies every Saturday for us.

So... Please learn from my mistakes. Ask questions. Don't stop til you get the answers. Or better than that. Write down, in your own writing, the recipe for those special cookies, or meatloaf, or whatever treat your family loves. They will always remember those special occasions with you. And maybe, just maybe, when they are designing their own house, they will put a special memory in it that will alway remind them of you.
